Gulf stream?

Mi è sempre stato detto che la Liguria ha una corrente che porta da E verso W... il triste caso di cronaca della Contessa caduta (o buttata?) in mare dalla sua villa di Portofino e ritrovata pochi giorni dopo in Francia ne sono testimoni.

Domenica scorsa ho potuto verificare di persona la velocità della corrente in una tranquilla pagaiata da Chiavari a Portofino.

Non essendoci stati ne vento ne onda i dati che ne risultano sono abbastanza neutri.

Assieme ad Antonio e Vincenzo siamo partiti da Chiavari alle 8.55 e siamo arrivati giusti alle 10.00 alla punta di Portofino.

Anche considerando di aver sempre pagaiato (non è vero, ci siamo fermati a metà golfo a fare qualche eskimo per rinfrescarci) e considerando di aver fatto un tiro diritto (in realtà avremo "zig-zagato" un po' allungando il percorso) viene fuori una media di 9 km/h!!

Visto che si chiaccherava e si pagaiava in relax difficilmente saremo andati a più di 6 km/h (poco più di 3 nodi) .... ne deduco che la corrente verso W sia di almeno un nodo e mezzo.

Non so se si tratti di un fenomeno regolare e costante, in ogni caso mi verrebbe la curiosità di riprovare una ELC stando fuori di 2-3 km per vedere quanto si guadagna.

I was always told that Liguria has a current that leads from E to the W.... this could explain the sad story of the Countess fallen (or thrown?) into the sea from her villa in Portofino and found a few days later in France.

Last Sunday, I could verify by myself the current velocity in a quiet paddle from Chiavari to Portofino.

There were neither wind nor wave so the resulting data are fairly neutral.

Together with Antonio and Vincenzo we left Chiavari at 8:55 and we arrived at the head of Portofino at 10 o'clock.

Even considering that we paddled constantly (not true, we stopped halfway to do some refreshing eskimo rolls) and considering that we hold a straight path (by sure we zig-zag-ed a little bit lengthening the path) we kept an average of 9 km / h!

Since we were chatting and paddling in a relaxed way we hardly went more than 6 km/h .... I must conclude that the current towards W is at least one and a half knot.

I do not know whether this is a stable stream, in any case I would be curious to try a ELC (East Liguria Challenge, one day paddle from Portovenere to Sestri Levante) remaining 2-3 km

offshore to see how much the stream is helping.
