Too fast for us

Sunday the 10th of Jan. Antonio, Cesare and I were expecting a rough sea with strong wind from S ...at least this was the forecast... actually we found good waves, 2m and sometimes 3 m, but the sea was not too heavy and easy.

I was surprised that it was not easy to surf the waves regardless the good height they had. I think we can explain this with the speed of the waves: they were too fast and we could not accelerete our kayaks enough to catch them.
I have evaluated a speed of 15-20 m/s that is approx. 70 km/h.
My impression is confirmed with data I found in the internet:

"..... an open sea wave has a period of 20 s, lenght of 600 m, and a speed of 30 m/s; a swell wave with no direct wind action has a period of 10 s, lenght of 150 m and a speed of 15 m/s; a wind wave has a period of 7 s, lenght of 70 m and speed of 10 m/s.... etc."

Saggiamente abbiamo pensato "stiamo lontani.... facimme sta domenica in santa pace..."

So it was a nice merry-go-round, big but also smooth and easy to be faced. Of course close to the reef where the waves were breaking it was another level of danger, we could had been thrown against the rocks. Wisely we thought "steer clear.... let's have a quiet sunday.."

Wed did the landing in a sheltered part of the gulf, the waves were only half meter, anyway it was enough to have some adrenalin.

Those who know me well... can imagine the rest of the day, we had lunch at the "Osteria della Mattana" in Sestri Levante.

I want to thank Antonio for the pictures and for staying with us regardless a bad throatache and Cesare to have reached us in Sestri (lot of km from his home)
