Gulf stream?

I was always told that Liguria has a current that leads from E to the W.... this could explain the sad story of the Countess fallen (or thrown?) into the sea from her villa in Portofino and found a few days later in France.

Last Sunday, I could verify by myself the current velocity in a quiet paddle from Chiavari to Portofino.
There were neither wind nor wave so the resulting data are fairly neutral.
Together with Antonio and Vincenzo we left Chiavari at 8:55 and we arrived at the head of Portofino at 10 o'clock.
Even considering that we paddled constantly (not true, we stopped halfway to do some refreshing eskimo rolls) and considering that we hold a straight path (by sure we zig-zag-ed a little bit lengthening the path) we kept an average of 9 km / h!

Since we were chatting and paddling in a relaxed way we hardly went more than 6 km/h .... I must conclude that the current towards W is at least one and a half knot.

I do not know whether this is a stable stream, in any case I would be curious to try a ELC (East Liguria Challenge, one day paddle from Portovenere to Sestri Levante) remaining 2-3 km
offshore to see how much the stream is helping.

Carbopaletta

I have always had the curiosity about how a Greenland paddle would perform with its general dimensions but with the flat and sharp form of a river blade (blade that as the Americans do I will call here "Euro" to distinguish it from Greenland)
Having no answer, I built one, in order to reach minimum thicknesses I used a wooden slat reinforced with carbon fiber as a base ... hence the name (note: this makes sense only in Italian....)
The paddle is 235 cm by 10 cm of maximum width

Yesterday I paddled in Adda River with my Baidarka and the "carbopaletta" ... here is the report.
In fact I think I have learned something from this little experiment ... let me explain: I always have
felt the difference between the euro and the greenland very clearly without however understanding exactly how much was due to the blade shape and when to the thinness of the blades.
Well with the carbopaletta you have the general greenland shape and the sharp and less "fat" profile of the euro .... ergo you can get an idea of where the properties of the paddle "really are".

Now I can say my impression: the greenland owes its peculiarity to the rhombus section and not so much to the elongated blade.
The rhombus section gives a little variable lift from the angle of approach to the water, or rather, always gains purchase on the water even if placed out of an optimal angle. The euro on the other hand brings a lot on a precise angle and away from that point of maximum efficiency the purchase collapses and the blade "runs away"
Well the carbopaletta has this same characteristic of the euro: it carries a lot and takes a lot of water on a precise angle and then "runs away". As a greenland user I don't like this feature ... but it is the same as the euro and probably the river runners will appreciate this behavior.
In the bow rudder it is practically a euro, precise slicing and you feel a lot of strength if you make it work.

The blade also has some youth flaws ... I left the outer edge with a sharp square profile and this is not that great, it tends to pull air bubbles down. Here too I have learned that if the blade is very flat the entry edge must be very sharp.
You can afford a somewhat massive edge if behind there is the rhomboid section that continues to open the water, if instead there is a flat sheet behind ... well then the water closes towards it swirling and dragging air.
On the other hand, I am satisfied with the loom: it is made up of three wooden strips with two carbon sheets, it is very rigid and at the same time "right" to the touch.

Now I will wait for one of the next WE in which I will not be at the sea to correct the profile and then I will do other tests.
